The Hadith of the Crying Date-Palm Stem During the Friday Khutbah

Introduction

This event occurred when the Prophet (PBUH) would deliver his Friday Khutbah (sermon) while resting against the trunk of a date-palm tree.

Later, when a pulpit (minbar) was constructed for him, something truly extraordinary took place that brought the companions to tears. This hadith offers profound spiritual insights about the love for the Prophet (PBUH) and the immense blessings of being in his presence.

The Hadith Narration

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (RA): 

The Prophet (PBUH) used to stand by a stem of a date-palm tree [while delivering a Khutba (religious talk)]. When the pulpit was placed for him we heard that stem crying like a pregnant she-camel till the Prophet (PBUH) got down from the pulpit and placed his hand over it.

Explanation of the Event

This hadith describes a remarkable event in which even an inanimate object showed sorrow over being away from the Prophet (PBUH). 

The companions gathered in the mosque were astonished to hear the sound of a tree trunk weeping, akin to a camel in distress.

In response, the Prophet (PBUH) gently placed his blessed hand on it, and instantly, the weeping ceased. Scholars suggest that this date-palm stem yearned for the remembrance of Allah and the companionship of the Messenger (PBUH).

Lessons Derived from the Hadith

Love for the Prophet (PBUH): Even a lifeless object expressed a sense of yearning and sadness when it was apart from the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). This should inspire believers to cultivate a deeper love and connection with him.
