Authentic Hadith on the Jumuah Adhan and the Third Adhan Introduced by Uthman (RA)

Introduction

The Adhan, or call to prayer, is an important aspect of Islam, signaling the time for prayer and bringing Muslims together for worship. Among the five daily prayers, Jumuah, which is the Friday prayer, stands out as one of the most vital gatherings in the Islamic faith.

Hadith on the Jumuah Adhan

Narrated Az-Zuhri:

I heard As-Saib bin Yazid (RA) saying, In the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (PBUH), and Abu Bakr and Umar (RA), the Adhan for the Jumuah prayer used to be pronounced after the Imam had taken his seat on the pulpit.

But when the people increased in number during the caliphate of Uthman (RA), he introduced a third Adhan on Friday for the (Jumuah prayer) and it was pronounced at affairs remained stable and firm (in the succeeding years).

Explanation of the Hadith

During the Prophet’s time (PBUH): For Jumuah, there was just a single Adhan that was called once the Imam took his seat on the pulpit.

During Abu Bakr and Umar’s caliphate (RA): The same tradition carried on with just one Adhan.

Long-term effect: This approach persisted and received the approval of the companions, highlighting the significance of adjusting organizational strategies while remaining true to Islamic values.

Conclusion

The story of the Jumuah Adhan shows how Islamic practices can both stay the same and adapt over time. In the early days, the Prophet (PBUH), Abu Bakr (RA), and Umar (RA) all used just one Adhan.
