Importance of Ghusl (Bath) and Personal

Cleanliness on Friday in Islam

Narrated Abu Said (RA): I testify that Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said, The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every Muslim who has attained the age of puberty and (also) the cleaning of his teeth with Siwak, and the using of perfume, if available.

Amr (a subnarrator) said, I confirm that the taking of a bath is compulsory, but as for the Siwak and the use of perfume, Allah knows better whether it is obligatory or not, but according to the Hadith it is as above.

Explanation of the Hadith

This genuine account emphasizes the proper conduct and preparations for the Friday (Jumu‘ah) prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated that all Muslims who have reached puberty must perform ghusl, or a ritual bath, on Fridays.

In addition to this, it's also encouraged to use the Siwak, a traditional tooth-stick, or to clean the mouth, as well as to apply perfume.

These actions not only enhance personal cleanliness but also bring extra rewards.

Ghusl (Bath): Many scholars regard it as essential, meaning it's a must for Muslims to participate in the Friday prayer while being clean and refreshed.

Siwak (Tooth Cleaning): There is a great emphasis on a Sunnah that not only encourages good oral hygiene but also emphasizes the importance of spiritual cleanliness.

Perfume: It’s encouraged for men to follow certain Sunnah practices when they visit the mosque. These actions help create a more pleasant atmosphere during the congregational prayer.

Lessons from the Hadith

Spiritual Preparation: Friday prayer isn't just a regular weekly duty; it's also a moment to pay special attention to how we look and to cleanliness.

Community Etiquette: A Muslim takes care to clean themselves and put on perfume, ensuring they don’t make anyone uncomfortable during the bustling Friday gathering.

Islam and Hygiene: The hadith highlights how important personal cleanliness and grooming are in Islam, as well as the significance of behaving well in public.

Conclusion

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) made it clear that for those who have hit puberty, taking a bath on Friday is a must.

He also strongly encouraged cleaning the teeth and using perfume as part of this practice.

These actions highlight how Islam beautifully intertwines spiritual devotion with the importance of being clean and responsible in social settings.
